Black Streaks on Your Roof: What They Are and How to Get Rid of Them
Those dark streaks running down your roof are not dirt, and they are not permanent damage. They are a living algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it feeds on your shingles. The safe way to remove it is a soft wash: a gentle cleaner that kills the algae at the root, then a low-pressure rinse. Never high pressure. Around our shaded lake roofs in Mecosta County, these streaks are very common. Here is what causes them, why they matter, and how One Stop Exterior Cleaning clears them the right way.
What causes black streaks on a roof
The streaks come from a blue-green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. The algae is not black itself. It makes a dark coating to shield itself from the sun, and that coating is the streak you see.
It spreads by spores in the air, so once one house on a road has it, the neighbors often get it too. It loves warm, damp shade, which is why it shows up first on the north side of a roof and on roofs tucked under trees. Both are everyday sights on our lake properties around Chippewa Lake and Canadian Lakes. The streaks follow the flow of water down the roof, so they look like stripes running from the peak to the gutters.
Is it hurting your roof?
The algae will not eat through your roof overnight, but over time it does real harm:
- It traps moisture. The dark layer holds water against shingles that are built to shed it. Constant damp wears the shingle out early.
- It holds heat. A dark, streaked roof runs hotter than a clean one. That extra heat ages the shingles and can warm your attic.
- It spreads. A few streaks today can cover the whole roof in a few years. The longer you wait, the harder it is to clear.
- It looks neglected. A streaked roof makes the whole house look tired, which matters a lot if you are thinking of selling.
How NOT to clean your roof
Before the right way, here are the wrong ways that cost you more later:
- Do not pressure wash it. High pressure can blast shingles loose, strip the protective grit, and force water underneath. It can void your warranty. Pressure is great for concrete and terrible for roofs.
- Do not pour on straight bleach. Undiluted bleach can harm shingles, kill the plants below, and corrode gutters and flashing.
- Do not scrub it. Climbing up and brushing the streaks tears the grit off the shingles and shortens the roof's life.
- Do not ignore it. It will not clear on its own. Treating it early, while the coverage is light, is easier and costs less.
The right way: a soft wash
The safe method is a soft wash, and it is what we do on every roof:
- Apply the cleaner. We put a solution built to kill algae and moss across the roof at low pressure, close to a garden hose. No blasting.
- Let it work. The cleaner needs time to soak in and kill the growth at the root. It breaks down that dark coating.
- Rinse gently. A low-pressure rinse carries the dead algae off the roof. We wet down and protect the plants and landscaping below the whole time.
- Let the rain finish it. The roof keeps clearing over the next few weeks as rain rinses off the last of the dead algae. Within about a month it looks dramatically better.

How long do the results last?
A properly soft-washed roof usually stays clear for two to three years in our Michigan climate. Heavily shaded roofs surrounded by trees may need it sooner. You can slow the regrowth by trimming back overhanging branches for more sun and airflow, and by keeping your gutters clear so water is not backing up onto the roof edge. Some homeowners have us clean the roof every couple of years as simple upkeep. It costs far less than replacing a roof that wore out early under untreated algae.
